Miami’s Carnival’s offshoot for youths returns to Lauderhill

It’s Carnival time! A Broward County spinoff of Miami Carnival is set to return this weekend.

The Junior Carnival, as its name implies, aims to share this annual Caribbean tradition with younger generations, and is set for Saturday, Oct. 1, at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill.

Scheduled from 1 to 10 p.m. are competitions for masquerade bands, steelpan music, soca/calypso performers as well as a parade, kids’ zone, games and food vendors. The emcees for the day are radio personalities Gillian Smart of Cane Radio’s “Caribbean Riddims” show and Mike Andrews of “The Caribbean Connection Radio Show.”

“We are excited to bring our Junior Carnival back after the 2-year pandemic break,” says John Beckford, chief marketing officer for Miami Carnival. “It is essential … that we promote the richness and vibrancy of culture in our multicultural community.”

There will also be a tribute to Miya Marcano, the 19-year-old college sophomore who last year was found dead in an Orlando wooded area. The graduate from Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines was once a Miami Junior Carnival Queen pageant winner and often played “mas,” which is a Caribbean colloquialism short for masquerade, in which participants dance along the parade route wearing costumes and masks.

“It is an honor to serve the Caribbean community as this organization teaches our children how to embrace who they are and preserve the Caribbean culture,” says Mikesha Murray, store manager and assistant vice president for TD Bank, which is sponsoring the event.

The Junior Carnival is part of a larger slate of events staged in South Florida.

  • Panorama, a steel pan competitions, will take place at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill from 5 p.m. to midnight Friday, Oct. 7.
  • J’Ouvert, which commemorates freedom from slavery, will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo Center.
  • The Miami Carnival parade and concert will also be at the expo center, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9.

The Miami Carnival’s Junior Carnival will be at Central Broward Regional Park, 3700 NW 11th Place, Lauderhill. Tickets are $15. Parking is $10. For more information, visit MiamiCarnival.org.
