“You’re hired!” The very moment Lord Alan Sugar aimed his finger at me and confirmed this in The Apprentice boardroom, I knew immediately that he had hired the best candidate. To be honest, I knew at the very start of the process that I would become his business partner. This isn’t arrogance on my behalf; I just knew that hiring skilled and knowledgeable people delivers enhanced growth. I was a perfect fit.

However, my experience, past and present, within the construction industry has taught me that hiring the best people is fundamentally the main driving force behind any successful business. But it’s becoming increasingly noticeable that many business owners in construction, whether they’re in electrical, plumbing, heating or boiler installations, are simply too afraid to hire staff. This simply must change if businesses are to scale up and become significantly successful.

Take Lord Sugar, for example, an incredibly successful businessman in his own right. Why does a man with an abundance of success feel the need to hire when he could quite easily run a business alone?

The simple fact of the matter is that he possesses the knowledge and vast amounts of experience to know that to grow a business, he will need the right people in the correct places to develop that growth. Of course, it’s going to cost him with salaries, overhead and so on, but by hiring skilled staff and creating a workforce to drive his business, it’s inevitable that revenue will increase significantly.

Therefore, within your construction business, you shouldn’t allow hiring staff to become a taboo subject that holds you back. Think about the best business owners who are progressing further — they are never alone. Employing people who will take control of various aspects of your construction company will allow you to take increased control of your strategy and drive.

If you are solely attempting to search for leads, chasing payments and taking care of customer service while building a database, on top of managing the tools you need, your business will most likely fail to flourish. What will probably happen, however, is you will end up taking your eye off the important goal. Jobs will undoubtedly become messy, and you will soon discover that exhaustion ultimately leads to mistakes being made.

Where Are You Planning To Take Your Company?

Ask yourself this one important question: Where are you planning to take your company?

Let’s face it, you almost certainly launched your business to earn as much revenue as possible. After all, it’s not a hobby.

But there will probably come a time when you hit a ceiling — believe me, I know. I’ve been there. Driving a business hard, with plenty of passion and a desire to be successful, is what all of us strive to achieve in this industry. That’s why we drag ourselves out of bed each morning.

Reaching a point where you think you’ve taken it as far as you can will ultimately demand that you rethink your strategy. That’s (hopefully) the moment when you’ll suddenly realize that hiring staff is the only way to push on and increase growth within your business.

I’ve hired hundreds of staff over the years, and it’s something that I’m incredibly proud of. The construction businesses I’m currently operating certainly wouldn’t be experiencing the levels of success they are without the people I’ve brought in. 

Think of your construction business as a car’s engine. It has many moving parts, and without these, it would immediately break down.

These many moving parts are the people you hire for your business. They all have jobs to do that keep the engine running smoothly, and without them, a breakdown is inevitable.

The engine, though, requires oil and fuel, along with an engine management system, to work effectively and efficiently. You as the business owner are both the oil and the fuel, the driving force that keeps the parts of the engine constantly moving. The engine management system is your senior team — if there’s a problem, they know exactly how to fix it.

To grow a business, you need an effective and efficient engine. You need to hire people.

Increase Your Revenue

Hiring the right people for the right jobs gives you the time to focus on directing your business to where you want it to go. Your revenue will increase, and your presence within the construction industry will become bigger. Plus, you’ll be creating jobs, which means you’ll be helping the economy thrive, and the work within the construction market will become a lot more accessible, especially to your own business.

If you are serious about growing your construction business to a larger level and scaling up further, then please, make your next move a positive one by getting into the habit of saying: “You’re hired!”
