After a year of touring the world, legendary salsa singer Gilberto Santa Rosa will bring his “Camínalo” (Walk It) Tour to South Florida on Friday, Aug. 19.
The concert — set for 8 p.m. at the Au-Rene Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale — is part of a tour that began in Santa Rosa’s native Puerto Rico in June 2021 and has made stops throughout the United States, as well as in Spain and Latin America.
“‘Camínalo Tour’ is a tour that we started last year under very special conditions because it was the first time we faced a live audience after almost two years due to the pandemic,” Santa Rosa told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
He chose “Camínalo” for his tour because it is “a phrase that I identified with myself. It is something more rhythmic, that had no other meaning, but that became for me a philosophy of life,” he said in a previous interview with the Sun Sentinel. “Walking suggests movement, suggests going forward. That’s how it came about … because it’s about our enthusiasm on this tour that was left in the air with the onset of the pandemic.”
“Camínalo” includes tropical fusions, boleros and his usual salsa genre. Santa Rosa said concertgoers can expect to enjoy classics such as “Conciencia”, “Perdóname, “Que Alguien Me Diga” and “Conteo Regresivo” as well as boleros including “Un Amor para la Historia” y “Si Te Dijeron.”
“We have a very interesting repertoire,” he said.
He also plans to perform his most recent single, “For Sale,” which was written by singers Alejandro Sanz and Carlos Vives. The song talks about the difficult situation that many couples face when they separate and must divest themselves of certain belongings as part of the breakup process.
“We have all met someone who, after breaking up with their partner, decides to sell those objects that remind them of life as a couple, or that they simply no longer need,” he said. “But there are things that do not have to be present for one to remember those moments that, in one way or another, were significant. We present to the public this fun theme that sees the process of closing cycles with a certain humor.”
Known as “El Caballero de la Salsa” (The Gentleman of Salsa), Santa Rosa has won a Grammy Award and five Latin Grammy Awards. His trajectory includes more than 40 years and about 40 albums.
“I am very happy to be able to close this tour that has already been running for a year and that has given us so many unforgettable moments. These upcoming concerts will be very special, because we haven’t been to some cities for a long time and that always gives them a particular aura,” he said. “The musicians who accompany me from Puerto Rico, all those who are part of the tour, and I are more than ready to present you the ‘Camínalo Tour’ …
