Gators Use Strong Performances to Advance at ITA All-American Championships

CARY, N.C. – Freshman Anastasia Sysoeva and a pair of Florida doubles teams are advancing in the qualifying rounds at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-American Championships after putting together a string of strong performances on Tuesday.

Sysoeva’s first win as a Gator came in impressive fashion, defeating a ranked opponent in the opening round of qualifying at North Carolina State’s indoor facility. Matched-up against No. 86 Casie Wooten of Wake Forest, the freshman showed no signs of intimidation, cruising to a 6-2 opening set victory before claiming the match behind a 6-4 effort in the second set. Sysoeva will meet North Carolina’s Anika Yarlagadda on Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET.

On the doubles side of competition, the Gators put on statement performances in the qualifying rounds. alice dubney and Bente Speethe first duo for UF to win the Freeman Memorial doubles tournament since 2004 last season, opened their doubles draw with a convincing victory over Olivia Peet and Avelina Sayfetdinova of Texas Tech, 8-4.

In their second match of the day, Dudeney and Spee met Southeastern Conference opponents Kylie Collins and Safiya Carrington of LSU. Ranked No. 59 in the nation, the Tigers duo pushed the Orange & Blue, but ultimately it was the Gators who came out on top, winning the match, 8-6. They are slated to faceoff with Fresno State’s Yinglak Jittakoak and Matilde Magrini tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Also earning a pair of wins on Monday afternoon was the squad of Briggs and Gailis. Beginning their afternoon against Fiona Crawley and Anika Yarlagadda (UNC), the two Gators managed to hold off the Tar Heels for an 8-5 win.

In perhaps an even stronger performance, Briggs and Gailis earned a convincing 8-4 victory over Alina Mukhortova and Maria Sholokhova of Wisconsin to advance to Tuesday’s deciding match for a chance to qualify for the main draw of the All-American Championships. Jaeden Brown and Kari Miller (Michigan) await Briggs and Gailis at 4:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
