Eight Strategies For Tackling A Necessary Task You Don’t Want To Do

For many people faced with an unpleasant assignment, procrastination provides a welcome escape. While putting off the work might be comforting in the short term, however, it inevitably results in more stress and frustration down the line.

As an entrepreneur, you’ll likely come across many tasks you’d rather not do, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed, burned out or are just having a busy day. Below, a panel of Young Entrepreneur Council members discuss the challenges of facing particularly daunting assignments and share their tips for tackling even the most dreaded tasks.

1. Write Down The Steps To Getting Started

When faced with a daunting task, I take pen to paper—literally. I find that pulling out my notebook, which I carry with me everywhere, is a grounding and organizing force. Write out what you need to do, in steps, to at least get started. And start crossing things off as you move through the task; there’s something extremely satisfying about doing so in ink. – Lindsay Tanne, LogicPrep

2. Start With Motivational Self-Talk

Change your programming with some motivating self-talk. Tell yourself you’re energized and will complete this project in record time with the utmost quality. I do this while doing some in-office exercise, whether jumping on my mini-trampoline or using a kettlebell to get the blood flowing. The best part of this type of self-talk? It helps create habits, and future “daunting” tasks will become less of a burden. And if those tasks persist to annoy, delegate them. – Ron Lieback, ContentMender

3. Make It First On Your To-Do List

When faced with a daunting task that I’m in no mood to complete, it is often the first thing I tackle. If I avoid the intimidating task and save it for last, it only grows in size and becomes such a seemingly insurmountable task that it may continually be pushed off. When I simply stop thinking about how much I don’t want to do the task and just go ahead and do it, I find that I gain the confidence and clarity needed to tackle all the other things in my day. – Ismael Wrixen, FE International

4. Reset With Exercise

I spend a lot of time on the computer, which can be soul-destroying. If there’s ever a time I have a daunting task that needs doing, it’s usually something that involves long hours on my computer. To give me the hype needed to crush my goals, I usually step back from my PC for a minimum of an hour and reset by doing exercise. Going for a jog or doing yoga tends to help me reset my mental state so I can tackle the tedious but necessary jobs I don’t want to do. Plus, it means I get in the day’s workout while simultaneously fueling the ambition I need to get work done. – Emily Stallings, Casely, Inc.

5. Work In Sprints

I use the Pomodoro Technique, which is a simple system of working in focused sprints for 25 minutes with five-minute breaks in between. You can always build up the energy to do 25 minutes of intense work, which is often enough to jump-start real progress on a daunting task and move you into the often elusive “flow” state we’re always searching for. – James Simpson, GoldFire Studios

6. Create The Right Mood

The first thing I do when faced with a daunting task is create the right mood to tackle it. This usually means listening to music that gets me pumped up or reading something that inspires me. I recommend listening to “brain music” that’s designed to alter your brainwave pattern as you listen to it. Try to shift your state of mind even slightly before you jump on to a big task. You’ll give yourself enough of a mental boost to get things going. As you keep working, you’ll find the momentum pick up, and you’ll manage the task better than you could have imagined. – Syed Balkhi, WPBeginner

7. Step Away

To tackle a daunting task, I allow myself to take space away from it first. It sounds counterintuitive, but what’s even more counterintuitive is staring at a computer screen waiting to feel motivated to work. Productivity doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. You have to train yourself to get things done on your own, especially in a remote work environment, or nothing will get done. If you’re having trouble concentrating and you’ve been trying for a bit, step away from your work and do something else. Eat something, go for a walk, call a friend, browse Twitter, etc. Taking your mind off your task can help you gain the motivation you need to get it over with. – Stephanie Wells, Formidable Forms

8. Break It Down

If you have a big task, you need to break it down into bite-sized, easily accomplished tasks. Get the project started with something easy for a win. Then move on to the next task, then the next and so forth. If you just stare at a big task, nothing will get done. So you need to start by breaking it out into smaller items, even delegating if needed. – Peter Boyd, PaperStreet Web Design
