Cybersecurity Trends From 2021 To Keep An Eye On In 2022

President & Chief Executive Officer, Netsphere.

In a digital era where the adoption of technology solutions across industries has been accelerated by the wider rollout of 5G and scaled remote working policies, 2021 saw a continuance of trends from the previous year. Enterprises scrambled in 2020 to implement practices that would guarantee business continuity, and previously unthought-of cybersecurity issues arose. As a result, 2021 saw increased scrutiny on business practices with more organizations emphasizing the lessons learned from the start of the pandemic and honing in on the critical role cybersecurity plays in digitization efforts.

Cybersecurity and 5G are going to take on an important role in 2022 as the drive for digitization continues to gain momentum. Around the world, government agencies are recognizing the need to improve cybersecurity in order to identify, protect against, deter and respond to threats in both the public and private sectors. The most successful enterprises in the new year could be those that work to strengthen their security framework and also embrace new technologies like 5G.

Digital transformations moved the needle in 2021.

In the wake of the pandemic, organizations across the globe have turned to digital communication tools, recognizing the need for quick, centralized means of communication as hybrid and remote working models have grown in popularity and industries have embraced the digital era. Companies around the world identified the need for communication solutions and ensured employees had the right tools to be digitally relevant and productive whether working from home or in an office.

Unfortunately, as enterprises adopted digital policies, cybersecurity challenges quickly arose. Security and risk management were elevated concerns in 2021 and will continue to be board-level issues in the new year and beyond. According to Gartner, “60% of organizations will use cybersecurity risk as a primary determinant in conducting third-party transactions and business engagements by 2025.”

Key Takeaway: The future of enterprises is only as secure as the digital technologies being utilized by organizations and individuals. Companies should lean into secure, enterprise-grade communication solutions in 2022 to demonstrate proactive policies versus reactive. End-to-end encrypted communications ensure compliance.

As evidenced by the onslaught of cybersecurity attacks across industries throughout the last year, keeping communication secure and private is a high priority for companies operating in public and private sectors. Highly regulated industries, such as healthcare, experienced an unprecedented need for efficient, secure and compliant communications over the last two years as the pandemic accelerated the digitization of the industry.

Responding to the need for compliant solutions and to drive digitization of the health care industry, the United Kingdom’s NHS Shared Business Services vetted suppliers and created the Patient/Citizen Communications and Engagement Solutions Framework to offer NHS and public sector organizations secure, compliant communication channels for internal and external services. (Full disclosure: My company is on this list.)

Key Takeaway: Enterprises and industries that recognize the need for and implement secure end-to-end encrypted solutions could safely digitize the workplace and processes without risking compliance.

5G is here to stay.

Last year saw accelerated rollouts of 5G across the globe, and 2022 will continue to see the accelerated deployment of the fifth-generation mobile network. As the latest evolution of technology that connects the world, 5G is designed to expand the mobile ecosystem and operates at high speeds with low latency and offers improved performance.

5G presents enterprises and consumers alike enriched experiences from faster download speeds to near-instant cloud access and enhanced network capacity, among others. With over 130 countries and counting investing in the technology, 5G is being adopted more quickly than the previous mobile network generation.

Key Takeaways: The digital era extends beyond improvements in cyberspace, and the adoption of 5G is the beginning of a more connected future. Technological progress will continue to drive industry transformations in 2022 and beyond.

Faster download and data transfer speeds and improved network reliability are driving forward innovations as well as a new era of connectivity that supports an increasingly mobile workforce. This new era of 5G connectivity coupled with enterprise-grade, end-to-end encrypted communication technology could unlock higher productivity and efficiency, resulting in better business performance and greater profitability in the year ahead.
