13 Habits You Can Embrace To Spark Creativity

No matter how creative you are, everyone eventually experiences an uninspired period of time. For some people, this slump is a minor nuisance or inconvenience, but for others, a lack of inspiration can put their entire career on hold and even put their job in jeopardy. Keeping your creative juices flowing can help you perform better in all aspects of life, regardless of your profession.

One of the best ways to spark creativity is to embrace a new habit. Whether you’re setting a morning routine to help you start the day in a creative way or are looking for activities to ignite a creative fire as soon as you need it burning, there are many ways to get back on track. To help set you in the right direction, 13 professionals from Forbes Business Council discuss the things they do to get their creative juices flowing when they’re feeling uninspired.

1. Make Time For Exercise

Exercise is definitely the best way to get your creative juices going as well as to get the energy needed to follow up on your ideas! The chemical changes that the body goes through when exercising, especially when doing so at a high intensity, make everyone feel happier and more positive, bringing a sense of accomplishment that translates into other areas of your work and personal life. – Omar Yunes, 54D

2. Take Mind Off The Task

I find that I need to completely take my mind off the task at hand in order to respark creativity. Doing something completely unrelated allows me to rediscover enthusiasm and solve difficult problems. I usually go for a run, mow the lawn and more recently, I’ve become more deeply involved in playing piano and guitar. – Ben Meisner, Ribbet

3. Make Playlists And Listen

I listen to music when I need to get those creative juices flowing. I have several playlists ready on standby depending on what mood I want to shift to and what I need in my business (or life) right now. I have different playlists to get hype, focus, destress, etc. – Julie Ball, Sparkle Hustle Grow

4. Find Your ‘Why’ For The Habit

Find your “why.” Inspiration comes from an internal motivation to meet your basic human needs. If you can get clear on why this new habit will improve your life or others, and then future-pace the benefits, you’ll have an unlimited amount of motivation to be creative. – Dana Cornell, Cornell Capital Holdings

5. Sign Up For Startup Products

Become a guinea pig. Go on Product Hunt, HackerNews and similar portals and sign up for new startup products. It’s a sure way to learn and get inspired while at the same time supporting fellow entrepreneurs. – Eze Vidra, Eze Vidra / Remagine Ventures

7. Picture Possibility For Growth

I start by seeking questions that get me excited. When I can better understand and picture the greater possibility for growth, change, joy or impact, it is a bridge from taking differentiated actions from past patterns to adopting those actions as an ongoing habit. The more I understand, the better I can picture the future I want to create with the habit. – Lowell Aplebaum, Vista Cova

8. Take A Clarity Break Each Day

Take a clarity break each day. If you work this 30- to 45-minute break into your daily routine, it will allow the business leader to take a step back to understand the big picture and potentially leave a little time for a more visionary and strategic thought process. – Scott Snider, Exit Planning Institute

9. Meet With Team Off-Screen

I like to get away from any screens and meet with my team next to a whiteboard. A regular face-to-face collaborative environment gets me excited and motivated to get creative. – Jo Stephens, Law Firm Sites, Inc

10. Do Something Different Every Day

Ensure that you do something completely different during the course of the day to take your mind off the problems at hand, be it going for a walk, playing an instrument, or even a video game. More often than not, by taking the conscious away from the rut, the subconscious kicks in to sometimes very surprising results. – Howard Rosen, LifeWIRE Corp

11. Look To The Great Artists

Creativity is my sweet spot. When I need a spark of inspiration, I look to great artists, like Michelangelo Buonarroti. He strived to excel at every task. He was a well-known and gifted sculptor. Then he was tasked to paint. He made sure that he was the best at that, too. He showed that when you combine hard work with incredible skill, you can literally achieve reaching the highest point of your field. – Nadir Qazi, DO, Qazi Cosmetic Clinic

12. Change Locations Or Your Environment

Changing locations to inspire creativity often helps me. It could be going to the beach, working out of a beautiful hotel lobby or changing the environment in my house to do new work. Adding a new morning regimen like music or a walk also helps me to think anew. – Lisa Caprelli, Unicorn Jazz

13. Be Open To The Unknown

Embracing a new habit itself may be what sparks creativity. Learning something new often has one take a different approach to understand a concept. Being open to the unknown and what it takes to learn may lead to utilizing skill sets that were dormant or needed to be engaged. It helps me when I relate a topic to a purpose and then seek to write notes on it. Writing often drives my creativity. – Paul L. Gunn, KUOG Corporation
